Texas Percussion [19 May 2006|08:40pm]

I was wondering, are any of you that play percussion going to state? I believe it's percussion solo&ensemble, and it will be in Austin, Texas. I'm not sure when it is exactly, but I believe Chapin's ensemble is leaving on May, 26th.

the Save the Hats Campaign in conjuction with School Pride [14 Apr 2006|01:11pm]

Hey, guys, I need your help. =^n.n^=

My marching band is the Marching Patriots, and ever since the band was created the constant throughout our uniforms' changes has been a tricorner hat. We are very proud of it as a symbol of who we are.

However, yesterday it was revealed to us that the uniforms for next year will no longer have tricorners, as Fred J. Miller does not make them. People have told me that I shouldn't care this much, as I am a senior and will never wear them, but I do, because for me it is a matter of school pride.

So I come to you for help. Do any of you also wear tricorners, especially if they are newer? What are they like (plastic, felted, wool even)? Do you know any place to get tricorners that would work for marching band? Do you have any ideas on what we can do? So far the only thing we are doing is creating a petition, and we hope to have enough support throughout the school to show our band directors that we want to keep our tricorners. (There is support within the student body but I don't know how helpful that will be.)

Anything you've got, please, it will be helpful. We're pretty much at a loss for what to do. Thank you SO much. =^n.n^=

[EDIT] Another thing... does anyone know of any professional groups (such as drum corps) that wear tricorners?

Also, I'd like to pass on this email I rec'd from a friend of mine:

Hi there everybody,

I don't know if you have heard, but Fulton County (Georgia) just voted by a narrow margin to drop instrumental music from all public elementary schools. This decision has, obviously, caused an immediate outrage among Atlanta musicians who know how important it is for our kids' musical as well as intellectual health to start early. It also scares me.

The New York Times did an article this past week on schools that have abandoned every class except math and reading in an effort to bring their students' test scores up (scores that are arbitrary at best--but that's just my opinion!). While I realize these particular schools are extreme cases, are they not also indicative of what's to come? Is taking music out of our elementary schools not just a step towards steamrolling over a well-rounded education? Is this the end of the line or are there more cuts to come? What's next? Junior high, high school...

Statistics across the board have proven that students who study music have better focus and broader understanding of new materials, and generally do better in school. I'm positive every parent has seen the effect of studying music on their child. The earlier we can offer them that opportunity the better chances they have. I urge all of you--and I very very rarely ask anyone to add their names to any list--to go to the website listed below and sign the petition to keep music in our schools. The site was created yesterday by a cellist in the Atlanta Symphony

Please help us let make our voices heard!

So I'm going to Disney World on January 2nd with the band and I am excited about it.
Anyone have good stories of your trips? Other reasons I should get even more excited? Things I must do while I'm there?

Also, (American Pie presents) Band Camp Unrated on DVD. Opinions?

Harry Potter 4 [04 Dec 2005|02:01pm]

You know you're a band nerd when...

...your favorite part of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was the brass band, and you squeed at the quadruple-belled euphonium (or whatever it was), and noticed Hogwart's sousa is as dented and old as some of your school's instruments *cough25yearoldbarisax*, and you wonder if you can get an arrangement of the music.

Yeah, I love being a band nerd. =^n.n^=

November 5th & 12th, 2005 [11 Nov 2005|08:06pm]
On November 5th, 2005 in Avondale, AZ- the entire Kingman High School Marching Band had a bandgasm in the stands during awards for a competition. We got the first ever rating of Superior with Distinction that any of our bands has ever gotten. It was so amazing. This season is great for us. We got our first in over 10 years Superior at NAU Band Day, then first place in Division II at Goldwater, then our Superior with Distinction. Tomorrow is the State Competition, in which they judge harder than in regular competitions, so wish us luck! And good luck to any of you with competitions this weekend.

oh band... [14 Oct 2005|11:23pm]

[ mood | crazy ]

So, is it just our band or has it been a sucky year? Our Games keep getting rained out, the freshman have NO interest in being in the band, and we never can make it to shows. And let me tell you, I LOVE shows. My god, i'd die without shows.

Dover band show NH is tomorrow... and uh... it's been raining here since last week. I feel like i'm in London. I hate not seeing the sun in forever, and being wet and COLD. Maybe if it would snow... then i'd be cool with it... anyway...

I think the whole "i hate band" "you're all dorks" "that blows" attitude toward band needs to die. I vote pro-band teen movie. Seriously - that girl Mary on MADE went to my school, and I hated the damn cameras that got onto the damn field while we were playing, got run into and screamed at us... then didn't put us on MADE? Honestly, I didn't want to be on TV. I dont care. But seriously... at our school, cheerleaders don't rule the school. They're lost without the band. We tight.

Yeah - game got cancelled tonite - lots o energy after chillin w/ the band peeps (movies, sexual action, etc...)

Okay, enough for now

If you could learn any other instrument, what would it be and why? baritone or bass drum, I <3 brass and drummers just have a lot of fun

Application?! [29 Sep 2005|04:15pm]

[ mood | geeky ]

Name: Anastasia Audriya Maria, AKA Stacey, Nasta, and Homeostasis.
Age/birthday: 14/3-6-91. (Everyone is born on my birthday!! I swear. u_u)
Grade [if any]: 9th! Yup, I'm a freshman. ^_^
School and city: Ypsilanti High School, Ypsilanti, MI. It's ip-suh-LAN-tee. If you don't know where that is, it's the same city as Eastern Michigan University. ^_^ Sometimes the EMU band marches through the neighborhood, and it's FABULOUS.
Instrument(s) and years played: Flute, for four years, drumkit for three, and handrumming for one year.
Groups you are in: Just musical? BANG! an all-girls' percussion ensemble, and Varsity band. Nonmusically, I just started a GSA at my high school, I play water polo, and am in Drama club. Woot!

Clarinet, to hear. <33 Klezmer is just the sexiest music around. And of course, the flute and drums in general.
Band(s)/Orchestra(s) to perform with/in: Middle school band was fun. I had this great band teacher, and it was like, "let's learn this piece! Wheeeeeee! *gigglelaugh*" I also ADORE BANG!. The BANG! girls have gotten me through so much, and we do fun stuff. ^_^
Band(s)/Orchestra(s) to watch: Around here, you can go to the the University of Michigan band practices for free. It's a GOOD band, and it's a free thing to do!
Band(s)/Orchestra(s) in general: The Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Talk about wow...
Composer/arranger: Howard Shore! And um, whoever wrote the Star Wars music. Can't remember the name, but that was some fun, tricky stuff.

Do you consider yourself a band geek? If so, why?:
YES! I have a great story about why. XD;; My aunt Beth had told me about chair in sixth grade and I was SO EXCITED. The flute section at my school was (and still is) horrible. I was like, OMFG! Yes, I can do that! (I'm a REALLY competitive person). I practiced all summer long, and when school started and we took the test,I ended up as fourth chair, behind three REALLY bad girls. I was miserable. XD; Then, at the semester I was promoted from seventh to eighth grade, so I was just automatically 6th chair out of six. There was Katrina, who was good, and then the other students, one of whom couldn't play an octave. So, that year, as last chair, I got the piccolo solo in the memorial day parade and 5 solos in the spring concert. x_x But I was still LAST CHAIR! So, now, as a high schooler, I am 2nd and Katrina is 3rd. XD; That's why I'm a band geek - I am SO competitive.
If you could learn any other instrument, what would it be and why? As I mentioned, clarinet, cause Klezmer is sexy. And maybe guitar, cause I'm like, THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD who can't play guitar.
Tell us some random band stories. Well, there's having my first fling with a girl at band camp. ^_^ She played flute, too. I guess the one that really sticks out in my mind is the May concert of 8th grade. Nathan Patterson, a student at the middle school, died of leukemia that year, and we dedicated our May concert to him. People read poems, we sang A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton, and played some songs with Alto Sax solos (his instrument) in the, along with LoTR music. At the end, everyone was a wreck, and we all stumbled back into the band room, crying and carrying chairs and hugging eachother. We were really sad, but I felt closer to them than I had felt before.

At band camp this last summer, I had this crazy band director. We called him Mr. Adams, because no one could remember his name and he had this HUGE Adam's Apple. He also was a hunch back with a pointy nose. His voice was nasally, but somehow he managed to spit alot when he talked. The defining moment of band camp for me was probably when he stood up on the podium as we and told us to pull out "Brazil," a piece we were working on.

"Repeat after me," he said. "Aye aye aye aye."

"Aye aye aye aye," we repeated.

"I am the frito bandito." Most giggled but he continued on, "I love frito's corn chips oh yes! I do/I love them so much hey! I'll steal them from you."

I hope we played it the way he had been hoping for. XD;
